Carrington Family Papers, 1807-1927

The Carrington Family Papers spans the lives of a prominent family in the Newark community. The collection dates from 1807-1927. The papers are divided by individual family members and further arranged in chronological order. Papers are organized in seven series: Correspondence, Literary Productions, Legal Documents, Financial Records, Printed Materials, Maps and Diagrams and Photographic Materials. Document types include letters, a commonplace book, legal documents, property-related deeds, records and mortgages, genealogy notes, maps, sketches and blueprints, photographs, tintypes, newspaper clippings, visiting cards, invitations, bills and receipts. The collection also includes awards of merit (3) and commemorative sashes (2).The bulk of the papers consist of documents owned by James M. Carrington, who possessed real estate property in Newark. The documents include bonds, deeds, and records of his mortgage properties (1834-1860). Papers also include a Last Will and Testament of Jabez G. Goble, a prominent physician and brother-in-law of James M. Carrington, and son of Luther Goble. Also included are deeds between James M. Carrington, the husband of Sarah Goble, and his father-in-law Luther Goble. In addition: some papers relating to Edward M. Carrington, a Newark attorney, and his wife Emma T. Carrington; their daughters, Ethel S. and Mabel H.; and son, Paul R. Carrington , a treasurer of the Fairly and Wilson Coal Company for over thirty years.
